Life as an intern : Pragyan Dalmia

Life as an intern at SpringRole | Pragyan Dalmia

We started the series talking to our interns to understand how it is like working at SpringRole, their ambitions, and their thoughts about technology.

The kind of fun the interns have and the pace at which they learn makes me wish I had a similar internship opportunity at the start of my career.

In the first post of the series, we discussed Yashasvi Chaudhary’s internship at SpringRole.

In this second post in the series, we speak with Pragyan Dalmia.

Pragyan is an engineer who is excited about machine learning and wants to implement it to solve real-world problems. Talking to him reaffirmed my faith in machine learning as a technology, and that it is doing good to change our future. Here is a discussion with Pragyan:

How was your time at SpringRole?

I had a great time at SpringRole as an intern. The working environment is excellent and inviting. The team helps you every step of the way to make sure you learn and grow.

Also, the fact that you get to work on live projects is a huge plus. The responsibility, coupled with the team’s real efforts to see you grow shines.

I could approach anyone from the team if there was something I was stuck on. It doesn’t matter how senior or junior the person is. There is no hierarchy here if you are looking for help. This is rare for even a startup.

“If we talk about the office culture, I don’t think I would be able to find a friendlier environment than here. The atmosphere will make you feel at home and at the same time encourages productive work. Yet, the team is not all about work. We used to play cricket every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Towards the end, it became a ritual for me.”

“I have seen exponential growth here, both personally and as a team. The team has grown with new teammates joining us pretty much every week. It has been amazing to see this growth.”

Describe the projects you worked on at SpringRole.

I started my internship here at SpringRole in January, and I was assigned to the Resume Parser project at SpringRole. The team had been working on it for some time then. When it was handed over to us — a team of 3 interns, the project had reached an accuracy of 60%.

“I have worked on other projects as well but my core focus and interest have always been in machine learning. In machine learning, there are numerous algorithms and approaches. You can try them and see which one fits.”

“The team of interns working on this project tried different approaches and we were actually able to increase the accuracy of the parser.”

The other project I worked on was for SpringVerify. It was to design an API to import the critical information from PAN, Aadhaar Card, and Driving license.

“The API could capture the key information from the image and automatically save it to the platform.”

What’s next for you?

I want to work and grow in the machine learning space. I want to join a team which is working on products which leverage this technology.

“I am in final year of college and would love to join a team which could give me access to grow in this space.”

What makes you love machine learning so much?

The patterns and the insights which could be drawn from raw data intrigues me. To see valuable insights pop out of the information is amazing. Sometimes the results are close to the predicted outcome. And other times unexpected patterns show up.

“Every single real-world problem could be solved by leveraging machine learning. We can predict the future outcome to a degree using the past data. This is powerful. This holds true for extended timelines as well.”

We, as humans, are cyclical and adhere to patterns daily. This is the basis for any machine learning framework. It is not easy as there are numerous different factors which contribute to a specific pattern recognition, which makes the effort even more enjoyable.

“There is a dark side to this as well, but I prefer to look at it from a value add standpoint. I would rather help society solve problems rather than using the technology to exploit in the name of profit.”

How do you envision your future?

I want to be in Lucknow, my hometown, building and contributing to society. I want to be close to my folks and want to spend time with them regularly.

“There is a lot in Lucknow which could be improved and technology, I believe, should be able to help. I definitely foresee myself working in machine learning space.”
