Life at Springworks: A day in the life of a Sr. Operations Specialist

Hemavathy V joined Springworks in November 2020 as a Senior Operations Specialist to handle business operations for our product- SpringVerify and comes with thirteen years of prior experience of working across different roles such as business development and customer support. 

Before Springworks, she worked as an Assistant Manager for a background verification company.

At Springworks, she is responsible for checking the quality of data entered in the systems reports for background checks of the client and initiating the process and ensuring closure of employment checks within the given time frame. She also utilizes different modes of the verification process and takes care of all the insufficiency related to various Verification.

This means she is responsible to ensure the high quality, timely and efficient delivery of background verification and to provide a high quality of services and compliance with the company policy.

Why can background checks take so long?

Turnaround times for completing a background check can vary based on the complexity of each individual’s personal background history.

A candidate may apply for a job in one location, but depending on the background check requirements, the client may request that the background check cover all of the locations where the candidate previously lived, worked, or attended school.

All of this requires diligence and persistence as courts may require physical in-person searches and when working with employment or education verifications, the verifier may not always be able to get in touch with schools or employers on their first call.

This is especially true around holiday times.

In some cases, past employment verification may be even more complex.

For instance, the employer is no longer in existence or perhaps if the candidate was self-employed.

In such instances, the applicant will need to provide alternate proof, such as tax documentation.

With respect to education verification, a school may require a specific release, a paid fee, or may no longer be in existence.

You must have come across many unique instances of fraud. Can you share a couple of anecdotes?

Yes. Frauds happen quite often.

Educational frauds:

  • There was a time when I faced the issue of forged document submission. A few candidates had never attended the class. But managed to arrange fake documents. After further investigation, University officials confirmed that the documents were fake.

Employment frauds:

  • The candidate never worked with any organization before forged fake salary slips and employment letter. After further investigation, we found out that the employer that he mentioned in the documents doesn’t exist.

Walk us through a day in the life of Hemavathy!

  • Get up with morning tea at 7 am.
  • Log in at 9.50 am.
  • Have Team meetings at 9.40 am.
  • Have Breakfast
  • Check my to-dos and Backlogs from the day before.
  • Have lunch at 1.45 pm
  • Watch Youtube videos/ web series during breaks.
  • Get done with the work till 8 pm.
  • Dinner.
  •  Spend some time with family.
  •  Head to sleep.

What advice would you give to other Operations Specialists?

Make sure to maintain a work-life balance and reduce manual intervention in your work.

Operations specialists should have strong leadership and oversight skills above all else. We need to ensure the organization is favorably received by customers, and have strong customer service skills.
