Life at Springworks: A Day In The Life of An SDE

Meet Siddharth, who is from Cochin, Kerala. He completed his engineering in Computer Science from Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science, Kerala. Before joining Springworks, he worked as a Product Specialist in an MNC. During his free time, he does stock market research, grooves to music and reads books. At Springworks, he works as a software development engineer and he recently celebrated his first work anniversary.

Let’s have a look at his journey!

How is it to work at a Startup?

It’s a huge shift. There is a lot of difference in work, flexibility and modes of communication. I was previously associated with an MNC and there was very little opportunity for growth and flexibility. The learnings were less and I felt I have to work at a place where I can unleash my full potential. At Springworks, I am given the space and time to work and learn new things. Although a lot of things are new here, I love the work and Startup culture.

You recently completed a year at Springworks, how has your journey been?

I started my work at Springworks as a Node developer. I up-skilled myself before joining here. Over here, from day 1 you are given the liberty to work on tasks and give your inputs. I have learned a lot in this one year. Reflecting on my one year at Springworks, the journey has been great. Not only did I make good friends, but I have been able to work on things that I have been wanting to work on for many days. I have gained a lot of hands-on experience and received a lot of feedback. You get recognised and you can experiment and work around things in many ways. Joining Springworks has been a great decision.

What do you like the most about working here?

It’s employee-friendly and Springworks takes a lot of effort into the work culture and gives the best for employees. There are many initiatives that bring out the best in employees. There are a lot of things to appreciate here. I love the culture and the efforts taken by everyone to go above and beyond. Every day is a great day to work here.

What do you do as an SDE here?

I am a full stack developer for EngageWith. I debug all the bugs that arise especially for Birthdays and Work Anniversary notifications that arise on the celebrations channel. Also, I am a Scrum Master right now. I ensure that everyone has enough tasks and there are no challenges amidst any pods. Recently, I have started to work on Albus too. I am doing the front-end development for Albus.

How was your Onboarding and Hiring process?

It is great to see that Springworks has few products that help in breaking the monotonous chain. The entire process was new and quick for me. The hiring process was completed in very few days which gives a sense of hope to the candidate.

I was referred to by my friend, Karthik Raj. I received a call from the hiring team on that day. And I was like “WOW” that’s really quick. But I was a little appalled by hearing about async communication as the culture and work ethics were new. To my surprise, things were very easy and quick due to async communication.  Every single step was detailed and seamless. I never felt out of the loop. Someone from the team always followed up and kept checking if anything was needed.

I had close to three interviews and one assignment to complete. The interviews were great as it was focused towards core concepts and I tried to stay truthful when I had no answers. The cultural manifesto was a great read.

I had my Background Verification which contained clear instructions.  The hiring team and HR were always helpful and quick with their responses. I had two buddies and managers and the team was confused about which team I should be part of, EngageWith or Toro.

My first day was great. I had my orientation and then which was followed by a team meeting and then I was introduced to my work.

Walk us through your day, Siddharth

I start my day at 8 AM and I freshen up, drop my younger sister at school and start work by 10 AM.  My work day starts with a standup call with my Albus team. Every Monday and Thursday, I prepare for my standups as I have to drive them. Then I look into the tickets assigned and then I work on Sentry and Code refactoring. I try to resolve the bugs and look into channels where my help is needed. I do code reviews for my team and ensure the tiniest of errors so that people will learn more. At Noon, I take a break and work from 2 PM to 8 PM. I freshen up, have dinner and either watch something or read a book.

What have been your greatest learnings and challenges so far?

My journey with JavaScript started here. I have got to learn a lot of concepts because of that. Apart from this, I got an opportunity to work on 1v1 app. The entire framework for this app was different and I had volunteered to develop it.  Most of the challenges arise due to communication sometimes we tend to assume people are aware of things. It’s good to focus on “Err on the side of over-communication”. The best part of being a developer is, you try to debug and fix issues that arise. Through this process, I have learned a lot of things and there is a lot more to go.

What’s your personal favorite between EngageWith and Trivia?

I am all in for EngageWith. It’s a really great app with amazing features. I like working on this product and the redemption feature is really helpful. It helped me save a lot of money and gain discounts due to the vouchers.

What has been your favourite moment at work?

It definitely has to be the day I received my first Kudos. It was out of the blue and completely unexpected. But it was a great feeling.

Sneak – Peek into your life outside Springworks!

I am a traveler. I love bike rides and I always make use of the workation budget to travel and work. Leh Ladak is at the top of my list. Apart from this, on the weekends I read a lot of self-help books and I re-watch movies or shows. I also do a lot of courses and try to upskill myself whenever I can.
