India is among an elite club of nations who have a central digital identity system — Aadhaar. And with it, India is slated to become the largest community ever in history, in terms of the number of people, to have a digital identity. This is a part of the Digital India initiative from the Indian Government aimed at transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
Paperless governance is the target India is aiming at.
“E-governance is an essential part of our dream of a ‘Digital India,’ the more technology we infuse in governance, the better it is for India.” — Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India
Such a system already exists in Estonia, but at a much smaller scale due to the lesser population.
DigiLocker is a flagship program under Digital India. DigiLocker provides citizens a shareable private space on a public cloud and makes all documents/certificates available on this cloud. Indian citizens who sign up for a DigiLocker account get a dedicated cloud storage space that is linked to their Aadhaar (UIDAI) number.
DigiLocker houses 3.53 Billion authentic issued digital documents to date. This includes PAN Verification Record, Driving License, Vehicle RC, Aadhaar, Educational, and Other Certificates. These digital documents are legally valid documents under the Indian IT Act of 2000. This means having a DigiLocker account should be enough to showcase your documents at any authorized network.
Organizations that are registered with DigiLocker can push electronic copies of documents and certificates directly into user’s lockers. Citizens can also upload scanned copies of their legacy documents in their accounts. These legacy documents can be electronically signed using the eSign facility, which makes the document as good as self-attested.
Imagine the possibilities it opens up. Imagine the future where having to print any document will mean futile. A DigiLocker account would suffice for any of your document needs in any organization or government institution.
Digital Identity Verification
India, with DigiLocker, has a digital identity verification infrastructure in place. Indian Railway now accepts digital Aadhaar and Driving Licenses as valid ID proofs. There is no need to carry the original Driving License or Vehicle RC anymore. A DigiLocker account with these documents available will do.
Digital Education Verification
CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) issued 2019 Class X and XII Digital certificates through Digilocker. With this initiative, every student has a digital, government-approved, certificate repository.
Why are we excited about it?
A digital repository is a start to a future Digital India, and most importantly, digital verifiability. It is the first step towards authenticity and a big step towards curbing fake degrees and certificates.
The system is not perfect, and to be fair, a system at such a scale requires time to become perfect. With this, we are extremely bullish about the future — A future where digital identity would serve every facet of our lives, including our careers.
Springworks is building towards such a future too, for every working professional. Verifiability and authenticity are the core values that we want to infuse into everyone’s career aspirations and into every team who works with us.
SpringVerify is the modern take on the age-old problem of employee verification being costly, tedious, and out of reach of small businesses. We are trying to build a platform where the employee verification process happens seamlessly and with minimal effort required from both the company and the employee.
We believe that employee verification is a must for any business. It is a critical process in ensuring that every employee working with you is faithful and could be trusted. CareerBuilder survey shows that a company stands to lose on average $17000 on a wrong hire. Read more here.
We have built the platform with blockchain and believe that it will change virtually everything it comes in contact with. Blockchain helps us in building a decentralized system; which keeps all our data secure and immutable. Read more here.
